Rescuing and rehoming animals in Central New Jersey
Serving Highland Park, New Brunswick, Edison, Piscataway, and East Brunswick
Our values
We believe in a new kind of rescue work - one that values community, education, and is fundamentally restorative.
Cat problems are people problems: When people hurt, animals hurt - and vice versa. We take a community-oriented approach to animal welfare so we can support human beings as well as cats.
Anyone can do what we do: At one point in time, every person at Artemis was a nervous wreck who, despite knowing nothing, was compelled to help an animal in need. We learned what we know by doing online research, talking to other rescuers, and of course, making lots of mistakes. If we could learn, then you can too - and we’d love to help.
Healthy cats make a healthier world: Making sure that community cats are vaccinated and fixed is a crucial way to prevent illness for humans and other animals, keep neighborhoods clean, and make life better for the people who share their streets with cats.
About Us
Artemis Animal Rescue is a 100% foster-based, community centered non-profit rescue. Our work is anchored in compassion for all living beings, recognizing that cat welfare and human well-being are deeply interconnected.
We believe that when people struggle, animals do too. For this reason, we take a community-oriented approach to animal welfare, recognizing that animal rescue exists within a larger context of social injustice and inequality. Poverty, lack of access to affordable housing, domestic violence, and immigration policy are just some of the challenges and injustices that impact pet ownership, abandonment, and surrender. We prioritize keeping people and their pets together whenever possible, and create pathways for stray, abandoned, and feral cats into safe, loving homes. Every cat that enters our care receives comprehensive veterinary treatments, including vaccinations, parasites treatment, spay/neuter services, and a full veterinary evaluation before adoption.
Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) services when necessary to stabilize community cat populations
Financial assistance for essential veterinary care (including spaying and neutering services) to families in need, through our trusted veterinary, offering rescue discountsd
Deliver professional cat-related behavioral support to foster families, including guidance in socializing feral cats.
By prioritizing TNR, getting cats off the street, and community partnership, we help reduce cat overpopulation, prevent potential disease transmission among cats and humans, and improve neighborhood health. Healthy cats help create healthier communities, and we are committed to building both.
